Abstract:

We will explore a practical implementation of Smart Grid communication technologies starting from a strategic framework based on business application requirements, evolving into a communications architecture that will securely deliver the Smart Grid. We will look at security implications, technology & standards and how they tie fundamental principles into product selection and deployment strategy.

Biography:

Doug is the Senior Manager, Network Services for Exelon and was the communications architect that developed an end-to-end multi-service 4 tier communications strategy for Exelon and its two subsidiary Utilities PECO & ComEd. Doug is now managing the Engineering organizations responsible for deploying the Smart Grid communications infrastructure at both Utility companies. Doug has been employed by Exelon for 30 years, 15 years as a Nuclear Engineer before moving into the IT organization where he has held numerous infrastructure related positions. Doug sits on the Department of Commerce Spectrum Management Advisory Committee (CSMAC), UTC Board of Directors, Chairman of the SGIP CSWG AMI-Sec subcommittee and Chairman of the UTC Smart Networks Council.

About the TCIPG Seminar Series:

The seminar series is presented by the Trustworthy Cyber Infrastructure for the Power Grid (TCIPG) Project, an $18 million multi-university research effort whose partner institutions include the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Arizona State University, Dartmouth, and Washington State University. The TCIPG Project, a successor to the earlier NSF-funded TCIP Center, was founded in 2009 with support from the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. It is housed in the Information Trust Institute, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
