Abstract:

Advanced metering infrastructures (AMIs) enable two-way communications between smart meters and utility control centers. They are a key component of the smart grid initiative as they encompass a large number of devices and technologies and provide important pplications that improve energy consumption and grid reliability. They could also attract diverse cyber-physical threats, and thus they require ecient monitoring solutions to ensure the detection of known and unknown abnormal activities. This paper presents Amilyzer, a speci cation-based intrusion detection system (IDS) that leverages tight control over authorized AMI protocol operations to provide a practical network situational awareness solution for AMI operators.
