On the Cybersecurity of Control Systems and Applications

Abstract:

Control systems are part of our critical infrastructure as well as part of our daily home and work lives. These systems are in a process of unprecedented innovation. Part of these enhancements are driven by the convergence of cyber and physical systems that creates new opportunities to sense, monitor, interact with and control various aspects of control systems. This convergence introduces risk from cyber-attack and, therefore, security becomes an imperative. In this talk we first look at examples of how an industry research and development organization approaches these challenges in an effort to design practical secure control systems. We then look at changes in the broader controls industry including business models around the Internet of Things and posit the types of challenges and opportunities posed from a cybersecurity perspective.

Biography:

Dr. Himanshu Khurana is Director of Engineering for Honeywell Building Solutions and focuses on product innovation technologies and processes. Honeywell Building Solutions provides end-to-end solutions covering energy, safety, physical security and operations for building management systems and smart grid systems. Prior to this role, Dr. Khurana was the Senior Manager for the Integrated Security Technologies at Honeywell ACS Research Labs where he focused on research, development and technology transition in cybersecurity, computer vision, and physical security. From 2011 to 2013, he served on the Board of Directors for the Cyber Security Research Alliance (CSRA), an industry consortium focusing on game changing cybersecurity research. Dr. Khurana has published over 50 articles and co-developed several software tools covering a range of topics in distributed system security and critical infrastructure systems. He has been involved with several global electric grid initiatives including the North American Synchrophasor Initiative, NIST Cyber Security Working Group, DNP3 Technical Committee, OpenADR, SEP, European Commission expert working group on Smart Grid cybersecurity, the NIST CPS initiative and in developing relevant standards. Before joining Honeywell, Dr. Khurana was Principal Research Scientist at the Information Trust Institute, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and served as the Co-Principal Investigator and Principal Scientist for the Trustworthy Cyber Infrastructure for Power (TCIPG) center. He obtained his MS and PhD from the University of Maryland, College Park.

About the TCIPG Seminar Series:

The seminar series is presented by the Trustworthy Cyber Infrastructure for the Power Grid (TCIPG) Project, an $18 million multi-university research effort whose partner institutions include the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Arizona State University, Dartmouth, and Washington State University. The TCIPG Project, a successor to the earlier NSF-funded TCIP Center, was founded in 2009 with support from the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. It is housed in the Information Trust Institute, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
