Today’s new AMI “SmartMeters” have introduced a whole new set of security challenges to the power distribution industry. From two-way network communications and home area networks to disconnect switches and time of use billing, SmartMeters present new opportunities for fraud and general mayhem. This talk will explore the traditional security problems that utilities have faced and how they are changing with the advent of AMI as well as some of the challenges in mitigating the risk.
Robert Former is a security engineer with 20 years of experience in the IT field. Throughout his career, Robert has worked in many aspects of Information Technology and had experience in the design, implementation, and operation of cabling, LAN, WAN, MAN, both traditional and IP telephony, data centers, server systems, and, for the last 7 years, information security and compliance. Robert currently holds the ISC(2) CISSP(tm), ISACA CISA(tm), and NSA IAM/IEM certifications. He is employed by Itron, Inc., a leading manufacturer of energy measurement systems, as the Principal Security Engineer in the Office of the CTO. In his spare time, Robert enjoys spending time with his family as well as pursuing photography and amateur radio.
The seminar series is presented by the Trustworthy Cyber Infrastructure for the Power Grid (TCIPG) Project, an $18 million multi-university research effort whose partner institutions include the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Arizona State University, Dartmouth, and Washington State University. The TCIPG Project, a successor to the earlier NSF-funded TCIP Center, was founded in 2009 with support from the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. It is housed in the Information Trust Institute, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
