Abstract:

Electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles have attracted major attention worldwide due to their capabilities to reduce usage of petroleum usage, decrease air pollution and improve energy and environment sustainability. To enable ubiquity of electric vehicles (EVs) ranging from cars, busses, trucks to trains, multiple industrial sectors must come together, including automotive, transportation, power grid, and the information communication and technology (ICT) industries. These industries are predicting and anticipating major advances in energy storage, wireless charging, and autonomous driving technologies by 2050 which will have tremendous impact especially  on the on joint power grid and ICT sectors, called power grid informatics, to acquire, manage, coordinate, and direct all the digital information around resources involved in eletromobility. In this talk, I will talk about the impact of the expected EV advances on the power grid informatics.  Especially, I will  discuss the next generation challenges regarding trustworthy capabilities that must be considered and built into the future EV systems now if we want to ensure EVs’ high acceptability, drivers safety, and avoid cyber-attacks as seen in other industries.

Biography:

Klara Nahrstedt is a full professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Computer Science Department. Her research interests are directed toward multimedia mobile systems, quality of service (QoS) management, QoS-aware resource management, and real-time security in power grid and other cyber-physical systems. She is the co-author of widely used multimedia books `Multimedia: Computing, Communications and Applications' published by Prentice Hall, and ‘Multimedia Systems’ published by Springer Verlag. She is the recipient of the IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievements Award, Ralph and Catherine Fisher Professor chair, University Scholar, Humboldt Award, and the former chair of ACM SIG Multimedia. She was the general chair of ACM Multimedia 2006, general chair of ACM NOSSDAV 2007 and the general chair of IEEE Percom 2009.

Klara Nahrstedt received her Diploma in Mathematics from Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany in numerical analysis in 1985. In 1995 she received her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in the Department of Computer and Information Science. She is the ACM Fellow, IEEE Fellow, and member of the Leopoldina German National Academy of Sciences.

About the TCIPG Seminar Series:

The seminar series is presented by the Trustworthy Cyber Infrastructure for the Power Grid (TCIPG) Project, an $18 million multi-university research effort whose partner institutions include the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Arizona State University, Dartmouth, and Washington State University. The TCIPG Project, a successor to the earlier NSF-funded TCIP Center, was founded in 2009 with support from the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. It is housed in the Information Trust Institute, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
