George Gross
Professor George Gross’s interests lie at the intersection of power system operations and planning and market economics. Some of the research topics that he is currently investigating are optimal bidding strategies in competitive electricity markets, the provision of ancillary services, the determination of available transfer capability, reliability economics in a market environment, business models for the transmission service, and the role of the load as a resource. Gross is also investigating issues in distributed energy resources and, particularly, their integration into the grid. Additional research topics include the integration of renewable, storage, and demand response resources into the grid to take essential steps toward a sustainable electricity system. He has strong interests in the regulatory policy arena and the environmental aspects of electricity and is working on policy issues in the areas of cyber-security and privacy in the smart grid. He has been involved in the development of a number of new courses in the undergraduate and graduate curricula at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, including a popular Green Energy course for undergrads. He worked in the electric utility industry for nearly 20 years before assuming a position on the faculty at Illinois. He has an appointment at the Institute of Government and Public Affairs at Illinois and is a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department.
